naval air station. temperatures climbing in the lower 30s under mostly cloudy skies today. snow will hold off until tonight after midnight. it is 5:01. earlier this week we had a manhole cover blow off in the wheaton area and right now we have crews out there doing work. where georgia avenue meets plyers mill road you are losing a lane in both directions. the outer loop and show you that everything is a go here past university. inner loop is okay, as well. tracking a nice, quiet commute. this is in the district as we switch over to inbound new york avenue. lonely commute so far. virginia 395 northbound, lanes are wide open past duke to the district. before that 95 looks like it is delay free from fredericksburg. back to you. this morning, dozens of local workers are waking up in their own beds, back home with their families after spending two weeks in haiti.

the search and rescue team saved 16 lives after the quake rocked the country. surae chinn was there for the heart-warming reunion. >> reporter: a small group greeted the heros as they walked off the plane, but nothing compared to the crowd waiting for them miles away as three buses made its way to the academy. >> we don't know which bus it will be on. we hope it is the first. >> reporter: as they turned the corner, the crowds have not been able to contain themselves [cheering and applause] cindy porter overwhelmed we motion and just so happened that cindy's husband was on the first bus. >> hey guys [cheering and applause] >> daddy. >> children hugging their dads a little tighter not willing to let go. >> we are proud of you. >> and already putting their

would do it again in a heart beat. police are looking for a killer who shot a teenager at least seven times in a robbery. family and friends held a vigil last night for calvin woodland, junior. he was shot to death in a parking lot in southeast. his brother is the chief of staff for council member jim graham. metro is taking steps to improve worker safety in response to the recent deaths of several workers including two who were killed in rockville this week when they were struck by a maintenance truck. the acting chief safety officer says metro is reviewing several po posals for technology that alerts operator when workers are present such as blue lights and gps tracking. meanwhile metro riders will need to find exthat time times to take the trains and buses. without the surcharge they would have had to cut services to make up for the $44 million budget deficit. parents and students heading to

college are trying to figure out how much president obama's loan reform could help them. katrina fernandez finished high school in oxon hill, maryland with straight a's but is at a community college because her family can't afford a four-year school right now. the news couldn't come at a better time. maryland is about to unfreeze tuition costs at state universities for the first time in four years. it is five after the hour. time for the first "living $mart" report of the morning. jessica doyle is here with a preview of the last day of the week on wall street for the month of january. >> that's true. happy friday to you. of course the slump on wall street continues. the last seven days we have seen big losses. as for today, the market will react from better earnings reports from microsoft and amazon.com and the report on the gross domestic product. the dow fell 115 points yesterday to close at 10120. the nasdaq dropped 42.

the s&p 500 lost about 13. the dow and s&p stand now at nearly three-month lows. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke has been confirmed for a second term, just three days before the first term ends. 30 senators voted against him. this is the closest vote ever for a fed chairman. some criticize his support of bank bailouts and others say he kept the recession from turning in to a depression. president obama will head to baltimore where he will unveil a proposal aimed at creating new jobs. it will give $5,000 to companies to every new employee they add to their payroll this year. it will be interesting to see how that is laid out today and how wall street reacts to that. >> we have seen other programs where it takes forever for the paperwork to get through for people to get the money. you are back in this next half hour. >> free money for people to buy a foreclosured home. brand new program. we will tell you about it. this morning marks the end

of an era on washington air waves. today is donny simpson's last day on wpgc. kristin fisher is live at the studio with more. >> reporter: good morning. well, after a 32-year run on washington's air waves donny simpson will be signing off. i'm told he typically gets in here at 6:00 a.m. hopefully we will be able to chat with him then. but first look back at his long career in this industry. now, he got his start at the age of just 15 in his hometown of detroit. after eight years on the air there he moved to washington, d.c. in 1977 where he hosted a morning show and served as program director for 15 years. in 19993 he made the jump to wpgc and has been their signature morning personality ever since. he is best known as a deejay

but dappled in -- dabbled in tv. he was the host of video soul. and he has appeared on sit comes like martin, the jamie foxx and arisennial hall show. so far he has not said what his plans are when the signs off here this morning, but there is definitely a chance he could reappear on the washington area waives sometimes in the mutual. we will have to wait and see and hope to chat with him whenever he gets in. but whatever happens a true legend in the broadcast media will be signing off this morns. back to you. >> really nice guy. a parent's complaint gets a version of a well-known book yanked from local libraries. and michelle obama goes to a school to see how youngsters stay healthy. and the wizards lack of success may have led to an all-

wind chill is generally running upper single digits to mid teens. bus stop you may want to drive the kids and wait for the bus or drive them to school. 21 national. northwesterly wind at 14. giving us a wind chill of 8 and the barometer 30.39. the snow across kansas and oklahoma but in northern arkansas up to missouri snow. and then the transition area with the freezing rain across central arkansas heading to memphis, they are lucky they will just be wet and not icy and snow moving in to kentucky and tennessee. with the arctic air coming down this will go east along i-40. this is where we have a winter storm watch for the bay and northern neck, down 0 fredericksburg, spotsylvania, richmond, warnings in southern virginia. for us i think we may see one inch or so in the metro. up to frederick may not see a flake. one to three through southern

cooperate. look for the bridge to be closed the next two weekends instead. come monday crews are on track to shut down the eastern avenue bridge over 295. that span is scheduled to be closed for ten months. it is part of a labbation and expansion project. can be rehabilitation and expansion project. this afternoon, a dc national guard unit is deploying for iraq. family members will say farewell to 175 airmen during a ceremony at andrews air force base. the 121st fighter squadron includes pilots, aircraft maintainers and support personnel for the f-16 jet. the quad ron is expected to be gone for a four-month rotation. a medical team from our area is back home after helping out in haiti. the doctors and nurses from inova fairfax hospital have returned from their mission to treat earthquake survivors.

they will share their stories later tonight and we will have that on 9 news now. >> she's smiling, giggly and plays with her brothers a lot. a little stubborn. >> that's how christy describes her newly adopted daughter from haiti. the 3-year-old's name is aila. she was airlifted out of haiti after their orphanage was destroyed by the earthquake. they had been trying to adopt her for a year. they say so far she is making the transition with ease. >> we have an update this morning to a story you first saw on 9 news now, the meet right that crash -- meteorite that crashed through a doctor's raft roof and was donated to the smithsonian is at the center of dispute. the smithsonian was going to pay him $5,000. money he planned to donate to the haitian relief effort but now things are on hold. 9 news now caught up with the doctor by phone last night.

>> today, we got a -- an e-mail that said the brother of the mainland lord that we deal with as a tenant was coming to the smithsonian to pick up the rock and take it home and that he did not agree with donating it to the smithsonian. >> 9 news spoke with the landlord's family last night and they told us they just want to make sure the rock stays safe in the museum. they say they will have more to say later today. people around washington have been listening to him more than 30 years but today is donnie simpson's last day on the radio show here. 9 news now digital correspondent kristin fisher is live at the wpgc studios with more. good morning. >> that's right. we are awaiting the arrival of donnie simpson on his last day on the air here at 95.5. we are told he should be getting here at 6:00 a.m. until then we are chatting live

with deejay aladdin. he's been working with donnie simpson for what, a year, right. >> about right, yes. >> what are you going to miss the most about donnie simpson? >> oh, man, just the way he comes in his warm spirit when he comes in the morning. his stories. donnie simpson is just a great guy. i'm going to miss him so much. >> you have only been working with him a year but i know he's the kind of guy where you get a lot of good stories out of him quick. what is your favorite. >> i'm a big prince fan and he told me a story about how he sap actually had a chance to go in the studio with prince. nobody goes in the studio with prince. so that lets you know what caliber of guy donnie simpson is. >> absolutely. >> we're both kind of young bucks in this business. he's been on the air in dc for 32 years. i'm sure you have gotten some advice from him. what's the best piece of advice donnie simpson has given you

over the years. >> the biggest piece of advice is staying true to yourself and your listeners, your audience. he really gave himself to his audience. so, you got donnie simpson. he gave his family, his stories, his life. so i think the biggest thing i take from him is being true to yourself and your audience. >> i know you will miss don't knee, all of his viewers will miss him and hopefully we will have a chance to chat with donnie simpson. -- all of his listeners will miss him. i'm thinking tv, viewers. back to you. >> he did do tv so those viewers will miss him, too. time for another "living $mart" report and jessica doyle is back with the latest on toyota's safety problems. we are hearing monday is the first possible day that the parts to make repairs will be available. toyota has two possible fixes for 2.3 million vehicles.

it is targeted for accelerator pedals that could stick and cause accidents. still unclear when repairs can be made. in the meantime they have expanded the pedal recall to vehicles in china and europe and house committee has ordered toyota and federal safety officials to steph testify on february 25th about the problems with a possible investigation announced later today. more people may get help to avoid a foreclosure. a government program aimed at helping struggling homeowners is criticized for not helping enough people. new guidelines will require more paperwork to be submitted in the beginning of the process but should make it easier for people to qualify eventually for loan modifications. free money to help you buy a home. fannie mae is offering to pay 3.5% in closing cost assistance to potential buyers of foreclosured homes. if you don't want the money to closing costs fannie mae will give you the equivalent amount

today president obama makes his first visit to baltimore since stopping there last january on the way to his inauguration. the preparation for the visit are nearly complete. the president will tour a small business and outline a new jobs proposal. after a plea in new york politicians it appears the white house will look for another site to try terror suspects. the initial plan is to try khalid sheik mohammad in a court in manhattan close to the world trade center site. that raised costs and security concerns. mexican archaeologist have discovered an 1100-year-old tomb that may help to explain the collapse of the mayan empire. it contains items like the culture, indicating the group may have occupied the area. more testing isunder way. helping out with the recovery in haiti doesn't always require special skills. that story is coming up. a new study suggests that

quiet commute. over to you. >> thank you. some interesting news about ban on the use of cell phones while driving. a study finds there are no reductions in crashes after hand held phone bans take effect. terrell brown takes a look. >> reporter: it took a car crash for mark to put the brakes on texting while driving. >> like your mother telling you to stop doing something. you will stop for a while and then again and again. >> reporter: he didn't stop. he got a ticket for breaking laws it. but according to the research those laws may not be keeping drivers any safer. >> these are the only studies we know of how well the laws are working a enwe see no affect. >> reporter: the study found no reduction in crashes in states with laws that ban hand held cell phone use and no indication the rise in cell phone use has led to a spike in car crashes and there was no difference between hand held
